Company Profile

Company Overview

Greenville Hospital System is a not-for-profit academic health organization committed to medical excellence through research and education and is accredited by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Hospital Organizations (JCAHO). Our five campuses provide integrated healthcare to communities across Greenville County and beyond through a tertiary referral and education center, community hospitals, a long term acute care hospital, nursing home, outpatient facilities and wellness centers.

Greenville Hospital System (GHS) is a 1254 bed, five campus Academic Health System through formal affiliation with the University of South Carolina Health Sciences Division in Columbia, SC, approximately 1.5 hours away. This affiliation is primarily based upon the fact that one third of the USC medical students relocate to Greenville at the end of their second year of medical school and complete their training at GHS. In addition, the USC Colleges of Pharmacy, Social Work, Nursing, and Public Health either have or are developing significant academic presence at GHS, associated with establishment of a joint USC/GHS Institute for Advancement of Health Care to lead and support innovations in health care delivery. As a longstanding ACGME accredited sponsor of graduate medical education, GHS currently has 164 housestaff training in seven residency programs and four subspecialty residency programs (fellowships). GHS is a member of COTH, AAMC, and UHC. Finally, GHS not only has substantial involvement in translational research with three IRBs overseeing 530 active clinical trials, but also serves as a clinical teaching campus for 38 different South Carolina academic institutions including 15 colleges and universities.

The five GHS campuses are centered around two community hospitals, a long term acute care facility, a 711 bed tertiary care center containing a Children's Hospital, a CARF accredited rehabilitative hospital, a behavioral health hospital, and a centrally located multispecialty ambulatory care and short stay procedural hospital. All of these campuses are integrated around coordinated health care services, centrally managed corporate support services, standardized care protocols, and shared expectations for clinical effectiveness and quality. The majority of clinical services are provided by the University Medical Group, which is a multispecialty group of 345 physicians who are employees of GHS and serve as the core faculty for our academic programs. While GHS is a full service system, its product lines of focus are cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, women's, children's, and cancer. The 70% primary and 20% secondary GHS market share equated to approximately 43,000 discharges and 1,360,000 outpatient visits in fiscal year 2007. GHS remains one of the few not-for-profit double A bond rated hospital systems in the United States and was the top performer nationally in the Premier CMS cardiac surgery demonstration project.
