Description

The College of Nursing at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) seeks a research leader in nursing as the Endowed Professor of Geriatrics/Gerontology. We seek a strong research leader with a powerful combination of vision, energy, and leadership who will embrace and model the patient-centric culture within UAMS. UAMS ranks as the No. 1 hospital in Arkansas and the largest public employer in the state by U.S. News & World Report.

As a senior leader in nursing-led research at UAMS, the Sun Endowed Professor in Gerontology has been established to continue to support the College’s long-standing commitment to nursing research, education, and leadership in gerontology. Recognized for its high NCLEX pass rate, the College of Nursing offers undergraduate (BSN, RN-BSN) and graduate programs (Masters, DNP, and PhD), including the only PhD in Nursing program in the state of Arkansas.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Research, the Endowed Professor’s primary responsibility includes working with College leadership to develop the Gerontology Research Cluster for the College of Nursing. This will involve building a research portfolio for the cluster, mentoring junior faculty associated with this research focus in the College, and participating in the research vision and strategy building with other research cluster leaders in the CON to meet College and institutional research goals and metrics. The successful candidate will teach a minimum of one course per semester in the PhD program, mentor graduate students, and participate on PhD dissertation committees. Participation on other college and institutional administrative and service duties will also be expected.

OPPORTUNITY HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Opportunity to work side-by-side with some of the world’s best nurses and health care providers in a collaborative teaching and research environment — Nursing faculty are dedicated to promoting functional independence of older adults through interdisciplinary research, education, and leadership.
  • The College of Nursing has a robust history of gerontology research, including the prestigious designation as a National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence in 2000.
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate a scholarly focus in nursing gerontology, e.g. Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, QOL and functional capacity, or palliative care. A federal research funding track record is required. A cross-cutting focus on rural health and health disparities is strongly preferred.
  • Research: Total research funding more than $158.1 million across UAMS; ranking in top 16% of all U.S. Colleges & Universities in research funding from federal government.
  • Rich opportunities for clinical practice and research discovery, including research support at the Translational Research Institute. More than 500,000 sq. ft. devoted to research on UAMS campus.
  • UAMS has seven Centers on Aging located throughout the state, part of the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging.
  • As the only academic health center in Arkansas, UAMS has a unique combination of education, research, and clinical programs that encourages and supports teamwork and diversity.
  • The College of Nursing advances the body of nursing knowledge through scholarship in research — research activities that are theory testing, theory generating, and of an applied or basic research nature. A commitment to an interdisciplinary and translational team science approach is critical.
  • UAMS nursing faculty are national and regional leaders and their achievements include presidentships of Sigma Theta Tau International, the Southern Nursing Research Society, and the Southern Regional Education Board Council of Collegiate Education in Nursing.
  • Excellent Total compensation and benefit package options that provide security for you and your family.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicants must hold a PhD in nursing with demonstrated expertise in geriatrics/gerontology. If not doctorally prepared in nursing, then a Master’s degree in nursing is required in addition to the non-nursing doctoral degree.
  • Unencumbered RN or APRN license with eligibility for licensure in Arkansas. Must also be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Teaching experience in a nursing program, with graduate-level teaching experience preferred.
  • Demonstration of scholarship related activities, including a robust publications record, presentations at scientific conferences, and evidence of extramural grant funding are required.
  • A cross-cutting focus on rural health and health disparities is strongly preferred.
