The Brown University School of Public Health Center for Gerontology & Healthcare Research invites applications for two Assistant or Associate Professor positions on the research scholar (non-tenure) track. These positions will carry appointments in the Department of Health Services, Policy & Practice. The expected start date is July 1, 2024, but negotiable. The successful candidate will join a vibrant, collaborative research center with a successful portfolio of health services research focused on characterizing and improving the quality of care for vulnerable older adults and people living with chronic conditions.
Applicants must have a doctoral degree (MD or a PhD) and training and experience in health services research, epidemiology, gerontology, geriatrics, economics, and/or a related discipline, with strong evidence of rigorous research training and demonstrated potential for innovative scholarly activity and external funding. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
The Center for Gerontology & Healthcare Research is internationally-renowned for health services research focusing on the needs of marginalized and vulnerable populations, with particular focus on older adults and people receiving post-acute and long-term care supports and services. Active projects range from projects focused on people living with addiction and chronic illness, such as dementia, receiving post-acute and long-term care, who are Medicare or Medicaid recipients, or who are sexual and gender minorities. The Gerontology & Healthcare Research maintains an extensive infrastructure of Medicare and Medicaid data stretching back decades – these resources are used and reused by numerous projects, creating innumerable opportunities for multidisciplinary research. Furthermore, the Center for Gerontology & Healthcare Research is a national leader in pragmatic research and embedded clinical trials through its Center for Long-Term Care Quality & Innovation (Q&I), partnering researchers with healthcare providers to conduct interventional research that improves care for older adults, such as those in nursing homes. Q&I includes both research projects, led by Brown faculty, and federally-funded training and infrastructure grants, to expand national expertise in pragmatic research (e.g., the IMPACT Collaboratory and LeaRRn Rehabilitation Research Network).
Center for Gerontology & Healthcare Research faculty are supported by experienced grants administrators, a biostatistical and data management core, and research integrity and compliance staff. Faculty and staff collaborate from pre-award grant development and submission through post-award activities. Collectively, faculty have received approximately $200 million in funding from various NIH institutes, private foundations, federal and state governmental agencies, and industry over the last 20 years, attesting to our reputation and success.
The Department of Health Services, Policy & Practice (HSPP), which houses the Center, is one of the four School of Public Health departments. It includes eight research centers, a top-ranked doctoral program, and post-doctoral training programs supported by T32s from NIH and AHRQ. HSPP provides an academic home to researchers interested in a wide array of health services research populations, topics, and methods. Active projects range from pharmacoepidemiology and pharmaceutical health services research to health economics and health policy research, focused on populations and issues that include aging and older adults, end-of-life care, evidence-based medicine, care delivery, quality of care, disparities, and more. Faculty collaborate with researchers across the School and University, including the School of Public Health’s Center for Alcohol & Addition Studies, Center for Health Promotion & Health Equity, Population Studies Training Center, the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society, and the Brown Institute for Translational Science. Many faculty also have appointments at the Providence Veteran’s Administration Medical Long-Term Services & Supports Center of Innovation (LTSS-COIN).
